What is "backflow"?
Backflow means the flow of water or other liquids, mixtures or substances
into a potable water supply system. Backflow may occur when non-potable
water is siphoned into the pipe distribution system as a result of loss
of pressure.
What is a backflow
prevention assembly?
A backflow prevention assembly is a mechanical device installed on the
property boundary at the water meter (usually above ground). It prevents water
already in the piping system of the property from "backflowing" into the city’s
or others potable water system.
Who has a backflow
prevention assembly?
All connections to a public water supply are required to have a backflow
prevention device or assembly installed. In NE Alabama we find testable
backflow devices on the following; landscape sprinkler systems, fire sprinkler
systems, commercial water lines over 2" diameter or that have special
applications.
If I have a testable
backflow device how often should it be tested?
An annual inspection is required on all backflow assemblies.
